Maryland State Police say a woman was killed in a Beltway crash in Prince George’s County Monday after an errant tire hit her SUV. The driver was headed south on I-495 at Medical Center Drive when a rear tire fell off a northbound Dodge Ram 1500, flew across the southbound lanes and struck the woman’s Lexus NX 200t, causing her to crash into a concrete barrier and guardrail. Police said she was pronounced dead at the scene.
No one in the Dodge truck was hurt, police said, and no information was released as to why the tire fell off the vehicle. The crash is under investigation by the Maryland State Police Crash Team.
Accidents involving detached tires are uncommon but often catastrophic. Whether from poor maintenance, defective parts, or negligent actions, sudden equipment failures on a busy highway can leave other drivers with no time to react, leading to devastating outcomes.
Proper vehicle maintenance is critical for keeping yourself and everyone on the road safe. Regularly checking your tires, brakes, and other essential parts reduces the risk of mechanical failures. Staying proactive about your vehicle’s upkeep is one of the most effective ways to help prevent tragic accidents.
